UVic’s CUPE 917 to take Strike Vote

philipcox bargaining

On April 10, 2012,  the steering committee and the negotiating committee of CUPE 917, our sister Local, voted unanimously to recommend to its executive that it should undertake a vote of the general membership to initiate strike actions at the university due to the lack of progress in bargaining.  This vote should be slated to take place on the nineteenth of this month.

Background:

  • Local 917 has been without a contract for two years.
  • The local has met with the employer on approximately twenty occasions and have had exhaustive discussions on all issues.
  • The local has sought the aid of a mediator in an attempt to move the talks forward with little or no success.
  • The employer has been unwilling to move on any substantial issues and offers no monetary value to the contract for 2010-2012.
