Essential Services & Job Action

After a protracted summer attempting to negotiate an Essential Services agreement with the University of Victoria, CUPE Locals 917, 951, 4163 and the Professional Employees Association are in hearings convened by the BC Labour Board on August 21, 22 and 24 to determine essential staffing levels at UVic during strike activity.

As soon as Essential Services are determined, CUPE Locals 917 and 951 will have to serve 72 hours strike notice and proceed with job action.  Job action may be anything from work-to-rule (no volunteering extra time), an overtime ban, random localized picketing of individual buildings, and other creative ways to bring UVic back to the bargaining table.

The UVic  CUPE locals been working hard to engage with the local media, who have shown a lot of interest.  It appears that the community is very supportive of CUPE workers at UVic achieving a fair and reasonable settlement that addresses our issues of job security, inflation, and fair wages and we will continue to use every avenue to pressure UVic to negotiate collective agreements without requiring us to shut down the campus.
