Campus Security Behind Picket Lines

Job security  is a big issue for CUPE  workers at the University of Victoria. To press that point, security personnel will be walking off the job this morning. CUPE security officers will picket the Campus Security Building beside the Bookstore starting at 6 am.  The members of CUPE Local 917 will be joined by CUPE Local 951 clerks who work in the building. The unions say they picked the location to remind the administration of the importance of job security , to pressure the employer financially and because it will have a minimal impact on students. Students would have to cross the picket line to pay parking fines and get permits.  There will be some security working on campus as specified by essential services levels set by the BC Labour Relations Board.  The unions  say they intend to continue the job action until a fair and reasonable settlement in reached.
