How You Qualify for a Continuing Sessional Lecturer Designation (Component 3 Collective Agreement: Article 24)

Posted by cupe4163 on December 18, 2018

Continuing Sessional status is designated biennially.  Unit allocations for Continuing Sessional Lecturers are established for two years.  No additional Continuing Sessional Lecturers are designated until the next scheduled calculation. The next Continuing Sessional Calculation will be performed in 2020. The assignment years included in the calculation will be: 18/19, 17/18, 16/17, 15/16, 14/15.

Qualifying Criteria/Definitions

The following criteria/definitions are used currently to establish Continuing Sessional status.

  1. A Sessional Lecturer who was appointed to teach a minimum of 7.5 units in at least three of the previous five assignment years, and has not retired, will be designated as a Continuing Sessional.
  2. An assignment year is calculated from May 1 to April 30 of the following calendar year, and consists of three terms; the Summer session (May 1-August 31), Fall term (September 1 – December 31), and the Spring term (January 1-April 30), subject to University Calendar change.
  3. The Unit Allocation for a Continuing Sessional is calculated by the average number of units taught over the last four years. The average will be rounded to the lower 1.5 unit increment. When the number of units taught in the most recent of the four years is higher than average, the average will be rounded to the nearest 1.5 units. If the average is equidistant, and the number of units taught in the most recent year is higher than average, the average will be rounded up.
  4. If you teach in more than one department, your total units taught will be considered but there will be a separate calculation for each department based on the number of units taught in each department.
